When to Go & Travel Tips
Warm all year. The difference is rainfall and price. Airports, money and getting around are here too.
When to go
December to April
Dry season and peak demand. The best weather for hiking, and the time to book early for honeymoon-style resorts.
May and June
Warm, quieter and often better value before the wetter months begin.
June to November
Hurricane season, with more rain and humidity. Saint Lucia Carnival takes place in July.
Getting there
- Most flights from Canada land at Hewanorra International (UVF) in the far south. George F. L. Charles (SLU), near Castries, mostly handles regional flights.
- Non-stop flights run from Toronto, with seasonal service from some other Canadian cities.
- Hewanorra is about 45 to 60 minutes from Soufrière and about 1.5 hours from Rodney Bay. SLU is minutes from the north.
- Check which airport your flight uses before you choose a hotel. It can mean a short transfer or about 90 minutes.
Getting around
- Roads are steep and winding. I usually recommend pre-booked transfers over driving yourself.
- Traffic drives on the left.
- Many Soufrière resorts are built into hillsides with lots of steps, which matters for anyone with mobility concerns.
Practical notes
- The currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD). US dollars are widely accepted.
- English is official, and many Saint Lucians also speak Kwéyòl, a French-based Creole.
- Plugs are type G, 230 V. Bring an adapter — Canadian plugs won’t fit.
- Pack insect repellent. Mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue and chikungunya occur in the region.

Saint Lucia planning questions
Which airport should I fly into for Saint Lucia?
Most flights from Canada land at Hewanorra International (UVF) in the south. That is about 45 to 60 minutes from Soufrière and about 1.5 hours from Rodney Bay. George F. L. Charles (SLU) near Castries is minutes from the north, but it mostly handles regional flights.
Should I stay in the north or south of Saint Lucia?
Stay south, around Soufrière, for Piton views, hikes and romantic resorts. Stay north, around Rodney Bay, for more restaurants, flatter beaches and a livelier feel. With ten nights or more, a split stay gives you both.
Is Saint Lucia good for a honeymoon?
It is one of the Caribbean’s classic honeymoon islands, thanks to the scenery and its many intimate, adults-focused resorts. The key is choosing the resort carefully: some are remote and hillside, others are on the beach with more activity.
Can you hike the Pitons?
Gros Piton is the one most visitors hike, with a local guide. It is steep and can take several hours return, so start early. Petit Piton is much steeper and more technical, and I do not plan it for most travellers. Tet Paul Nature Trail is a gentler alternative with excellent views.
