Italy Trip Ideas & Inspiration
These are shapes, not packages. Italy goes better when each base gets enough nights that unpacking is worth it.
Ways to spend the time
- About 7 nights: Rome and Florence — Four nights in Rome and three in Florence. This is the first-trip shape I would start with. Rome Florence
- About 10 nights: Add Venice — The same two cities, plus two nights in Venice. Ten nights is the shortest version of all three that still feels like a holiday. Seven is not. Venice
- 8 to 10 nights: A city and one coast — Rome or Florence, then either the Amalfi Coast or the Cinque Terre. Not both. The coast needs its own base. The coast
- Slower: One city, then the countryside — Three or four nights in Florence or Rome, then a few nights in one country place. Fewer famous names, and a trip that does not feel like a timetable. Florence and the countryside
Is Italy right for this trip?
A good match if
- You want art, food and walking, and you are happy to book a few timed tickets ahead
- You would rather know two places well than see five from a train window
- A coast or countryside chapter matters as much as the cities
Maybe look elsewhere if
- You want a beach week with almost no city logistics — the Caribbean pages are a better fit
- You are hoping to do Rome, Florence, Venice and both coasts in seven nights
- You would rather drive the whole time, including inside the historic cities
