Netherlands Trip Ideas & Inspiration

Netherlands overview

The Netherlands is small and well connected, so the question is usually how many hotel changes you want. These are starting points, not fixed packages.

Ways to spend the time

  1. 3–4 nights: Amsterdam on its own — Canals, two major museums, a neighbourhood or two for wandering, and one day trip — Haarlem or Zaanse Schans are the easiest. Day trips by train
  2. 5–6 nights: Amsterdam plus a second base — Three nights in Amsterdam, then two or three in Utrecht or Delft, which are calmer and still close enough for day trips to The Hague or Rotterdam.
  3. Remembrance: Liberation history — Add a guided day to the Canadian War Cemeteries and liberation sites. These are farther from Amsterdam and work best with a driver or a dedicated tour. Canada and the Netherlands
  4. Multi-country: Amsterdam, Belgium and Paris — High-speed trains link Amsterdam and Brussels in under two hours, with Bruges about an hour beyond. Paris is roughly three and a half hours from Amsterdam by direct train. Belgium planning France planning

Is the Netherlands right for this trip?

A good match if

  • You want a short city break with plenty of culture
  • You are opening or closing a multi-country trip
  • Spring flowers or King’s Day are on your list
  • You like walking and trains more than driving

Maybe look elsewhere if

  • Beach time is the priority
  • You’re hoping for a last-minute Anne Frank House visit
  • You want a long countryside week with no city at all — though Dutch villages can be part of the plan

Keep planning
