Scotland Trip Ideas & Inspiration

Scotland overview

These are ways to shape a trip, not fixed packages. Scotland is compact enough for trains to do most of the work, and one Highland base often beats a new hotel every night. Tell me how you like to travel and I’ll adjust the days.

Ways to spend the time

  1. 7–8 nights: Edinburgh and Glasgow, with a Highlands day — Four nights in Edinburgh and three or four in Glasgow, about 50 minutes apart by train, with a guided day into the Highlands from either city.
  2. 10–12 nights: Edinburgh, a Highland base and Glasgow — Start in Edinburgh, take the train north to Inverness (around three and a half hours) for a few nights, then come back through the west Highlands to Glasgow. The West Highland Line from Glasgow to Fort William is one of the most scenic rail journeys in Britain.
  3. Add an island: The Isle of Skye — Two or three nights on Skye, reached by the Skye Bridge, for dramatic coastal scenery. It is a long day’s journey from the cities, so it fits best on a longer trip or with a night in the west Highlands on the way.
  4. Overnight: The Caledonian Sleeper — An overnight train from London Euston, running Sunday to Friday nights. The Lowlander serves Edinburgh and Glasgow, and the Highlander continues to Inverness, Fort William and Aberdeen, so you wake up in Scotland.
  5. Add London: Scotland plus London — Fly into London, spend a few nights there, and take the train north to Edinburgh in about four and a half hours. Fly home from Edinburgh or Glasgow where the schedule allows. United Kingdom planning

Is Scotland right for this trip?

A good match if

  • You love history, castles and cities you can explore on foot
  • Dramatic scenery matters more to you than beach weather
  • You’d like a train-based trip in an English-speaking country
  • You want food and drink with a story behind it

Maybe look elsewhere if

  • Warm, reliable weather is a must

  • You’re hoping for August in Edinburgh on short notice
