Greece Trip Ideas & Inspiration
These are ways to shape a trip, not fixed packages. Two or three islands are usually plenty, with time in Athens at the start or end. Tell me how you like to travel and I’ll adjust the days.
Ways to spend the time
- 10 nights: Athens and two Cyclades islands — Two nights in Athens, then four nights each on two islands on the same ferry route, such as Naxos and Santorini or Paros and Milos.
- 7–10 nights: Crete — A base in Chania or Rethymno for the west, with days for beaches, Knossos and, in the warmer months, the Samaria Gorge.
- 12–14 nights: Mainland and islands — Athens, Delphi and Meteora by car or tour, then a slower week on one or two islands.
- Add a country: Greece plus Italy or Croatia — Flights connect Athens easily with Italy and Croatia, so a few days on either side of the Adriatic makes a longer Mediterranean trip. Italy planning Croatia planning
Is Greece right for this trip?
A good match if
- Ancient history and island villages both appeal
- You enjoy beaches, swimming and slow seaside meals
- You’re comfortable with ferries and the odd schedule change
- You can travel in late spring or early autumn
Maybe look elsewhere if
- You dislike heat and can only travel in July or August
- You want to see many islands in one short trip
- You want a winter beach trip; many island hotels close from November to March
Keep planning
- Things to See & Do — Athens, the islands, Crete and the mainland
- When to Go & Travel Tips — Seasons, ferries and heat
- Europe travel planning — The bigger picture
- Small-ship cruises — Island hopping by small ship
- Croatia — Walled towns and island hopping
- Italy — Rome, Florence and the coast
- Trip checklist — Sun and summer packing
