Flying to Belize from Canada: Direct Flights, Seasons & What to Expect

· Heather Crozier

Which Canadian cities fly nonstop to Belize, when the seasonal flights run, and what to know about passports, the travel declaration and landing at BZE.

Can you fly direct to Belize from Canada?

Yes, you can fly nonstop to Belize from Canada. WestJet and Air Canada operate seasonal nonstop flights during the winter season, from Toronto, Calgary, Montreal and, new this winter, Winnipeg. Outside those flights you’ll connect, usually through a U.S. hub. Schedules change every season, so check the airline before you book.

Information last checked November 6, 2026. Schedules change every season, so treat the details below as a starting point and check the airline before you book.

Belize is closer than most people expect. A nonstop from Toronto is about a four-hour flight, and Belize doesn't change its clocks, so in winter you'll land one hour behind Toronto time.

I've flown it both ways: nonstop from Toronto, and with a stopover in the U.S.

Which Canadian Cities Have Nonstop Flights to Belize?

For winter 2026–27, here is what I could confirm from published sources:

Last winter, as a reference point, Belize's tourism board reported WestJet running Toronto up to four times a week at peak and Calgary up to three, with Air Canada's Montreal route launching in December 2025. Seasons usually start in late autumn, build through the holidays, and wind down by late spring.

Nonstop flights don't run daily, so your arrival and departure days can shape the whole trip. That's worth knowing before you book a tour, because it affects which days you have on the ground. Check current schedules directly with WestJet and Air Canada.

Flying From Other Canadian Cities

If you're not near one of those cities, you have two common options:

  • Connect within Canada. Fly to Toronto, Calgary or Montreal first, then take the nonstop. The advantage is staying on Canadian carriers and avoiding the U.S. transit step.
  • Connect through a U.S. hub. Many itineraries route through cities such as Houston, Miami, Dallas or Atlanta. This often opens more departure times, but you'll go through U.S. airport procedures and need to plan longer layovers.
  • If you're connecting on separate tickets, build in generous time. A delay on the first flight can leave you rebooking on your own. (More on that in When Travel Doesn't Go as Planned.)

    Entry Requirements for Canadians

The Government of Canada's travel advice for Belize lists the following (page updated November 3, 2026):

  • Passport: must be valid for at least six months after your planned departure from Belize. Your airline may enforce stricter rules.
  • Visa: not required for tourist stays of up to 30 days.
  • Travel declaration: you must complete Belize's online declaration form before travelling, for both entry and exit. The government advice refers to it as iDeclare.
  • Onward ticket and funds: officials may ask to see a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds.
  • Travelling with kids: children travelling alone or with one parent may need a notarized consent letter and proof of parentage.
  • Yellow fever: vaccination proof is not required for entry.
  • Requirements change. Please confirm on the Government of Canada's Belize travel advice page before you go. It's also where you'll find current safety information.

What Happens When You Land at Belize International Airport

Most international visitors arrive at Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE), just outside Belize City. After immigration and customs, you'll collect your bags and head to your next stop.

Here's the planning part many first-timers miss: Belize City is usually a gateway, not the destination. Where you go next decides how you move on:

  • Placencia and the south: about three hours by shuttle, or around 25 minutes on a small domestic plane.
  • San Ignacio and the jungle: a transfer by road.
  • Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker: a water taxi or a short flight.
  • Getting from Belize City to Placencia

If Placencia is your first stop, you have two ways to get there. A shuttle takes about three hours by road, and you get to watch the country change as you head south. Or you can hop on a domestic flight, which takes around 25 minutes. Just expect a much smaller plane than the one you flew in on.

I've broken all of these down, with the pros and cons, in How to Get Around Belize. If you're still deciding where to base yourself, start with Where to Stay in Belize.

Departure Fees and Money on the Way Out

Belize does charge departure, security and conservation fees, but when you fly home to Canada from Philip S.W. Goldson International, there's no separate departure fee to pay at the airport. The fees are built into your airfare, so you'll see them in your ticket's tax breakdown rather than at a counter on the way out. When to Book, and How to Choose Your Flight

I'm not going to claim a “cheapest week” without data, but a few things are true of this route:

  • Nonstop days are limited. Pick your trip dates around the flight days, not the other way around.
  • Peak season fills first. Winter school breaks and the holidays are busy; if you want those weeks, book early. See the best time to visit Belize for how seasons affect weather, crowds and prices.
  • A daytime arrival makes onward travel easier. Late arrivals can limit shuttles and domestic flights, and may mean an overnight in Belize City before you continue.
  • Look at the whole trip cost. A cheaper connecting flight can cost you a day of vacation. Compare that with what Belize actually costs.
  • Common Questions

Is there a direct flight to Belize from Canada?

Yes, seasonally. WestJet and Air Canada fly nonstop from Toronto, Calgary and Montreal, and WestJet adds Winnipeg from December 14, 2026. Check the airline for current days.

How long is the flight from Toronto to Belize?

About four hours nonstop. Belize is one hour behind Toronto in winter, so you'll land a little earlier on the clock than the flight time suggests.

Do Canadians need a visa for Belize?

Not for stays up to 30 days, according to the Government of Canada. You do need a passport valid six months past your departure date and the online travel declaration.

What's the best airport for a Placencia trip?

Most travellers fly into BZE, then take a shuttle (about three hours) or a small domestic plane (around 25 minutes) down to Placencia. The Placencia guide and getting around post cover the options.
