Belize can be expensive, but it does not have to be. It is not a typical cheap all-inclusive destination, so you may spend more than in Punta Cana or Cancún. Budget, mid-range, and luxury trips are all possible. How you stay, eat, and book tours matters more than one set price.

If you've started dreaming about a trip to Belize, there's a good chance you've wondered the same thing most travellers do:

The short answer? It can be—but it absolutely doesn't have to be.
Alongside questions like Is Belize Safe?, cost is one of the first things travellers ask me when they start planning — and as a Canadian advisor who's paid for Belize trips myself (including our wedding trip), I get why the sticker shock conversation comes up early.
Belize isn't necessarily the cheapest Caribbean destination, and depending on how you travel, you may spend a little more here than you would on a week at an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic or Mexico. But it's also a very different type of vacation. If you're comparing a Belize custom itinerary with a typical Caribbean vacation, the question is less “which is cheaper?” and more “which trip do you actually want?”
You can experience Belize on a tighter budget, splurge on a luxury escape, or land somewhere comfortably in between.
Ultimately, your Belize vacation can be as simple or as luxurious as you want to make it.
Belize Isn't Your Typical All-Inclusive Destination
One of the first things to understand when comparing the cost of Belize with other Caribbean destinations is that you're not necessarily comparing apples to apples.
There are all-inclusive resorts in Belize, but they're not nearly as common as what you'll find somewhere like the Dominican Republic.
You also won't find rows of enormous mega-resorts stretching down the coastline.
And personally, I think that's part of the appeal.
Belize leans much more toward smaller boutique resorts, locally owned hotels, beachfront cabanas, jungle lodges, and unique properties where the experience feels connected to the destination you're visiting — whether that's a stay in Placencia, a quieter stretch of coast around Hopkins, or inland adventure near San Ignacio.
There are larger and more luxurious resorts if that's what you're looking for, but even then, you're not usually getting the massive resort atmosphere you might picture in Punta Cana or Cancún.
Many properties will include something like a continental breakfast, while you'll head out and find your own lunch and dinner.
That means meals aren't necessarily wrapped into one big package price, but it also means you can leave the resort, try local restaurants, find that little beach bar you didn't know existed, and experience Belize beyond the walls of your hotel.
So, How Much Does a Trip to Belize Cost?
There's no magic number because it depends entirely on how you like to travel.
Think of Belize as having three general levels.
Budget-Friendly Belize
You don't need a luxury resort to have an incredible vacation.
Look for guesthouses, smaller hotels, vacation rentals, and properties a few minutes away from the beachfront rather than directly on it.
Eat where the locals eat, walk or bike when possible, choose a couple of must-do excursions instead of booking one every day, and spend some days simply enjoying where you are.
Some of the best days in Belize don't need an itinerary.
A beach, warm weather, and nowhere you need to be? That's not exactly a hardship.
Mid-Range Belize
This is probably the sweet spot for many travellers.
You can stay somewhere beautiful and comfortable, enjoy great restaurants, book several excursions and activities, and still keep your overall vacation costs reasonable.
Maybe you splurge on a beachfront room but eat at casual restaurants.
Or choose a less expensive hotel and put more of your budget toward snorkelling, Maya ruins, wildlife tours, or other experiences.
Spend your money on the things that matter most to you.
Luxury Belize
If you've been waiting for an excuse to spoil yourself, Belize can absolutely deliver.
Private villas, upscale boutique resorts, overwater accommodations, beachfront suites, private transfers, spa treatments, and private excursions are all available.
Your budget can climb pretty quickly when you start adding those things.
But that's a choice—not a requirement for visiting Belize.
What About Flights to Belize?
Flights are another expense that can change dramatically depending on when you're travelling, where you're flying from, and what type of seat you choose.
For some perspective, on my last trip to Belize, our round-trip flights from Toronto were approximately $670 CAD per person.
We definitely spent more than we normally would on that particular trip...but we also got married there in March 2026 (our first visit was April 2024), so I'm giving myself a pass on that one.
Your airfare could be higher or lower.
Booking further ahead can sometimes give you access to better options and fares, while other times an airline will release a great sale or you'll stumble across a last-minute deal.
There really isn't one strategy that guarantees the cheapest airfare every time.
Flexibility helps.
If you're comfortable flying economy, you'll generally spend less. If you'd rather have premium seating, extra space, or additional perks, you can choose to spend more.
It's another example of why the answer to “How much does Belize cost?” depends so much on the traveller.
A Simple Belize Budget Guide
Instead of setting one dollar amount and saying “This is what Belize costs,” start by dividing your budget into the major parts of the trip:
One thing Canadians should keep in mind is currency. Belize uses the Belize dollar, while US dollars are also widely accepted. Always check whether a quoted price is in Belize or US dollars before purchasing because you'll see both while travelling. Don't Forget About Taxes and Extras
When you're comparing accommodations online, pay attention to what's actually included in the price you're seeing.
The Belize Tourism Board requires tourist accommodations to collect a 9% accommodation tax, so make sure you're looking at the total price rather than only the advertised nightly rate.
The same goes for transfers, excursions, and other activities.
Before booking, find out what's included so you aren't surprised later.
How to Save Money on a Belize Vacation
If Belize is somewhere you've always wanted to visit but the money isn't sitting in your bank account waiting to be spent, that's okay.
Travel doesn't have to be pocket change for you to make it happen.
Sometimes it's simply about deciding this is something I want to do and working toward it.
Start a separate travel savings account and automatically put a little money into it every payday.
Look at expenses you could temporarily reduce. Maybe it's eating out one less time each week, cancelling subscriptions you're barely using, making coffee at home a few extra mornings or putting some of your birthday and holiday money toward your trip.
None of those things individually pays for a vacation.
But over six months or a year?
They add up.
For example, saving just $50 every week becomes $2,600 over a year.
Suddenly that dream trip doesn't seem quite so far away.
Consider Spreading Out the Cost
Another option some travellers prefer is paying toward their vacation over time rather than covering the entire cost at once.
Depending on your trip and what's available, there may be options that allow you to make payments instead of paying everything upfront.

Is Belize More Expensive Than the Dominican Republic?
Potentially, yes.
If your comparison is a heavily discounted, week-long all-inclusive package in the Dominican Republic versus a boutique beachfront resort in Belize plus restaurants and excursions, Belize may cost more. That's a package versus a custom itinerary— they're different products.
But they're different experiences.
Some travellers LOVE the all-inclusive experience.
You arrive, put your suitcase down, grab a drink, and don't think about much else for seven days.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Other travellers want to wander into town for dinner, talk to people who live there, take a boat out to the reef, visit Maya sites, explore the jungle, try different restaurants, and experience more of the destination itself.
Neither is better.
It's about how you want to travel.
So… Is Belize Expensive?
Belize can be expensive.
But it doesn't have to be.
You can visit Belize on a budget.
You can plan an amazing mid-range vacation without spending a fortune.
Or you can go completely luxurious and create the kind of vacation you've been saving for.
That's one of the things I love about Belize.
There's no single “right” way to experience it.
Your trip should fit your budget, your priorities, and your idea of a great vacation—not somebody else's.
