Tortola Trip Ideas & Inspiration

Tortola overview

These are ways to shape the time, not packages. Tortola is small enough that one hotel can be the whole trip, with a boat if you want the islands around it.

Ways to spend the time

  1. 5 to 7 nights: One base, and the north shore — Stay near Cane Garden Bay, or on the south coast close to Road Town if you would rather be by the harbour. Swim, take one afternoon in town, and leave the rest unplanned. You do not need a second hotel.
  2. 7 nights: The same base, with a boat day — Add one day to Virgin Gorda for the Baths, or to Jost Van Dyke for a beach afternoon. A second day on the water is plenty. The rest of the week can stay on Tortola, with Sage Mountain if you want a walk in the hills.
  3. Early August: Emancipation week — The holiday falls on the first Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of August, marking the abolition of slavery on 1 August 1834. It is a livelier, busier trip, with parades and gatherings in Road Town. Book earlier, and give the festival room in the days rather than treating it as a backdrop.

Is Tortola right for this trip?

A good match if

  • You want a beach with hills around it, and a boat day within reach
  • You like the idea of one hotel, not a packed route
  • You are travelling as a couple, a family or a small group
  • You are comfortable with a connection, since there is no non-stop from Canada

Maybe look elsewhere if

  • You want a city trip, or a flat resort strip with everything on one beach
  • You want long hikes to be the whole holiday — Sage Mountain is a morning
  • You need a non-stop flight
  • You are set on September and want no chance of a storm

Keep planning
